Talk Ultra – Episode 11

Episode 11 of Talk Ultra is now coming together… although not a Western States special it does have a big emphasis on the race.

We interview Jez Bragg from the UK who has placed 3rd and 4th in previous years. Will he move higher up the podium in 2012?

On 15 minutes of fame we speak with Greg and Dean from The African Attachment – they are currently putting together a series of short films for Salomon. At this years Western States they will follow Ryan Sandes.

In a Meltzer Moment I discuss the ‘odds’ with Karl Meltzer and he gives us his predictions for 1,2 and 3 in both the ladies and Mens races.

In Talk Training I discuss race nutrition with Marc Laithwaite and of course we will have all the news, reviews and a list of up and coming races.

Want to know how Western States started? Listen to my interview with Gordy Ainsleigh HERE. Gordy was the first person ever to run the 100 miles and the rest is history…

If you need some visual inspiration, watch this Salomon film from 2011 showing KIlian Jornet and some words from Gordy.

Episode 11 will be available on Friday 15th June here

The African Attachment – Salomon

Within minutes of recording audio with Greg and Dean from The African Attachment for episode 11 of Talk Ultra and they release the next instalment in the Salomon Running TV S2 E03 – Learning at Zegama.

This episode features Emelie Forsberg who placed 3rd at the Zegama race.

It’s a wonderful film that sums up the spirit of why we run… the passion, the bond, the learning curve and importantly the friendship.

Footage shows the severity of the Zegama course, the ability of the runners and the passion of spectators.

This is why I love running. Why I love ultra running…. enjoy!

UltrAspire Isomeric Pocket Handheld Bottle

Handheld bottles are not for every runner but UltrAspire have in some ways reinvented the handheld bottle with a few subtle tweaks.

They have re shaped the bottle, added a twist valve on the mouth piece, angled the neck and added a comfortable holding strap. Read my review here

Summits – insight

This is great little insight into Kilian’s next project by the man behind the camera, Seb Montaz.

Seb is without doubt one of the best cinematographers out there. He has worked closely with Kilian over the years and between them they are the perfect combination. Kilian performs the magic with his feet, Seb performs the magic with his eyes. Together it is a stunning combination.

UltrAspire SPRY race pack

Every now and again you get a product to test that ticks all the right boxes and you say to yourself “no way are you being sent back!”

This has just happened with the UltrAspire SPRY race pack. A really awesome solution for being minimal on your runs but not skimping on the essentials. You can read the review here

Rocky Mountain Dirt Running

I am really pleased to announce that Nick Clark will be the next guest on Talk Ultra episode 11.

Nick is a Brit that most people seem to think is an American… well he’s not, he’s British and despite what anyone else says, even Nick for that fact, he is staying British.

Nick is a top guy. I had the pleasure of finally meeting him and spending time with him in La Palma and then the Pyrenees. For me, Nick did one of the best ‘doubles’ in 2011 getting 3rd place at Western States and then 3rd place at Hardrock some 2 weeks later. Great result!

Anyway, Western States is around the corner and Nick will be on the start line. I will be chatting to him about his past, his expectations for the future and also about Zegama. You can read his Zegama blog post here. I also may even ask him about his birthday and about how we celebrated in the Pyrenees… but who knows, that may just be too much info!

Talk Ultra episode 11 will be available on June 15th via talkultra.com

Kilian’s Quest

Another great video to come out of the island of La Palma and once again filmed by the master, Seb Montaz.

It’s a who’s who of ultra running but I guess showing them in a different light… at play in the lava fields.

Usain Bolt’s record falls… ‘ish’

Athletis Weekly, June 1st, 2012. UK

It only takes a few beers, the side of a volcano, some of the best ultra runners in the world and the talent of Salomon Team Manager, Greg Vollet to put Usain Bolt’s 100m record to bed! Well, sort of…

Admittedly, Greg did say after his run that he has a new respect for Usain Bolt. It is all well and good running down a vertical slope and ‘just’ breaking the record, BUT to go that fast on the flat is quite something else.

Well done Greg. It was a pleasure to see this at first hand. What a fun way to spend a few hours.
