SKYRUNNING WORLDS
Laura Orgue and Remi Bonnet were crowned the 2018 world champs for the VK ahead of Lina El Kott, Hillary Gerardi, Thor Ludvigsen and Stian Angermund-Vik on one of the toughest day’s on a mountain I have ever spent – torrential rain, windy and super cold. HERE
Ragna Debats backed up her IAU World Trail title with an ULTRA title in the Ben Nevis Ultra ahead of Gemma Arenas and Mercedes Pila. Jonathan Albon ran a stunning race to win against ever-present Andre Jonsson and Luis Alberto Hernando – the race route was changed due to bad weather making for less elevation, less technical running and a shorter course. Kilian Jornet obliterated the old course record after battling all day with Nadir Maguet in the SKY distance Ring of Steall. Stian Angermund – Vik placed 3rd. Tove Alexandersson also obliterated the old CR ahead of Victoria Wilkinson and Holly Page. HERE
GLEN COE SKYLINE
The bad weather continued to bombard Scotland after the world champs and the SWS race once shortened with the Aonach Eagach ridge removed from the race – it was just too dangerous in high winds. However, Curved Ridge remained and post-race everyone commented what a challenging race they had despite the changes… Kilian Jornet pulled off a weekend double ahead f Andre Jonsson (wo also placed 2nd in the ultra) and Dani Jung. For the women, Hillary Gerardi and Jasmin Paris battled side-by-side during the race and were separated by seconds on the line – Hillary taking the win! Brittany Peterson was 3rd. HERE
TOR DES GEANTS
Franco Colle once again won the big jaunt in the Aosta Valley in 74:03. Silvia Trigueros won for the women in 87:50.
WORLDS 100km
Hideaki Yamauchi took the honours ahead of Takehiko Gyoba and Comrades champ, Bongmusa Mthembu – 6:28, 6:32 and 6:33.
Nikolina Sustic, Nele Alder-Baerens and Mai Fujisawa ran 1,2,3 in 7:20, 7:22 and 7:39.
TAHOE 200
Kyle Curtin and Courtney Dauwalter battled at the front and in the end, Kyle took the top slot in 49:32 ahead of Courtney’s 49:54.

What an incredible weekend at Skyline Scotland that elevated the UK mountain running scene on a world platform. Four events, the Salomon Mamores VK, Salomon Ring of Steall, Salomon Ben Nevis Ultra and the Salomon Glen Coe Skyline.

The highlight of the weekend saw the mountain power couple of Kilian Jornet and Emelie Forsberg not only take victories but set new course records. An incredible result for both! Nico Martin and Sarah Vieuille were crowned champions at Gerardmer running a 62km course. Results HERE.
Plain 100 in the USA
Gina Slaby set a new CR 26:32 and Piotr Chadovich ran 24:47 for overall victory.
John Muir Trail FKT
Hardrock 100 specialist Darcy Piceu (formerly Africa) covered the 223 miles in California to set a new FKT of 3-days, 8-hours beating the previous CR by 12-hours. Notably this was very close the the men’s record and later this year Francois D’Haene will attempt this FKT.

Big news… KJ, yep, MR Kilian Jornet summits Everest TWICE in one week. I will say that again – Everest twice in one week. This is without oxygen, fixed ropes and moving fast and light – wow! HERE
MaxiRace Annecy
Francois d’Haene proved he is one of THE best mountain runners in the world with another stunning victory. Equally, Caroline Chaverot returned from injury to dominate the ladies (and the mens) race. Francois finished in 12:55 – The USA’s Max King was 2nd 40-minutes later…. Ouch!
Caroline was 5th overall – 5th! Her time of 15:08 was almost 1-hour ahead of Andrea Huser in 16:08. Francesca Canepa was 3rd.
Zegama-Aizkorri
THE classic mountain marathon with an atmosphere like no other was won by Maite Maiora and Stian Angermund-Vik – both new CR’s! Not often that a Kilian record goes down but the dirty conditions produced a fast 3:45. Mountain legend Marco De Gasperi was 2nd and Marc Lauenstein 3rd, their times 3:48 and 3:53.
For the ladies, Silvia Rampazzo placed 2nd in 4:37 behind Maiora’s 4:34 and Sheila Aviles 3rd in 3:43.
This epic multi-day mountain race is the feature of this weeks show with three interviews. The race was won by Marcus Scotney, however, out was not plain sailing for Scotney. 2015 winner Jim Mann had dominated the early days before a navigational error left it wide open – Mann eventually finished 2nd ahead of Neil Talbott.

In the ladies race, Sabrina Verjee like Mann, had dominated the early days but a charging Carol Morgan (Spine winner) on day 4 closed the gap and then she took the lead on the 5th and final day. Caroline McIlroy finished 3rd.

Miguel Heras (Spain). Now 41 years old, Heras turned back the clock with his second-straight win, adding to September victory at Ultra Pirineu. Here, Heras overtook Jared Hazen (U.S.) with some 6k to go to win in 6:45. Hazen used a mid-race surge to break things open and then held on for second in 6:49. Cedric Fleureton (France) was third in 6:56.
Jasmin Nunige (Switzerland) won Ultravasan for the second time, and went on to run 8:00 here for the win, improving on last year’s finish by four minutes. Yngvild Kaspersen (Norway) stepped up in distance and ran strong for a second-place 8:13. I Núria Picas (Spain), who had seesawed with Kaspersen throughout, was third in 8:22.
IAU 24 HOUR
Dan Lawson from the UK took out the win (Dan has placed 3rd at Badwater and 2nd at Spartathlon) with 162 miles – ouch! Ondrej Velicka 2nd with 160 miles.
Maria Jansson set a new European record 155.74 miles – ouch! Patricia Bereznowska was 2nd with 150 miles.

On Monday, October 24, Pete Kostelnick broke the longstanding record for running across the U.S. Kostelnick linked the San Francisco and New York City Halls in 42 days, 6 hours, bettering a 1980 46-day, 8-hour record set by Frank Giannino, Jr. Other than a lone zero-mile day early in the run, Kostelnick knocked out 70-plus miles day after day.

Arguably the happiest runner and most grateful runner I have ever witnessed, Kevin Langton illuminated the trails. ‘Thank you for being here guys and supporting.’ Running with a smile and grin, whenever he passed he repeated, ‘Thank you for being here guys and supporting.’ You’ve got to love this sport… despite the difficulty, despite the fatigue, despite sore legs and being mentally tired, Langton’s smile never slipped, the positivity never waivered. Oberg, 93-miles, Langton’s family welcomed him with a hug and high fives, ‘let’s get this done’ he said.
